‘You can thank your insubordination for this!’: Boss responds to mass quitting by enforcing that employees give three months’ notice, employees rebel

Don't you just love it when an authority figure tries to double down on their unnecessary rules, only for it to cause even more backlash for them? Such was the case for this boss, who sent a wildly passive-aggressive email to the entire company after three employees left at once.

It's amusing that she thought the best way to handle this problem within the company culture was to enforce even harsher rules onto the employees who chose to stay. Why should they be punished for management's inability to maintain a sense of loyalty among the team? Of course, this email was not well-received among the folks who still work there. We wouldn't be surprised if more of them chose to walk, defying the new bogus "three months' notice" rule in the process. Given the fact that so many folks on this team will have left, let's just assume this manager's days are numbered as well.

  • Let’s also take a moment to acknowledge the fact that there is no world in which management could suddenly enforce a three months’ notice rule. At-will employment is exactly what it sounds like, and regardless of what any employer says in an impassioned, impulsive email, it’s a two-way street. Hopefully, none of these employees feel tied to this lady’s nonsensical rules and empty threats…

    Your "better opportunities" (doubtful. we pay you all fair wages) are really worth affecting your team members' quality of life? I myself have children and instead of being at their band recital this week I will have to be sitting at work posting job offers on Indeed instead. This is outrageous. You all need to speak amongst yourselves and plan these things out so you don't leave a company high and dry all at once.     The new rule in our employee handbook will be updated to now requiring a 3 months notice since that's how long it took to train you. You will give 3 months notice and train your replacement in the mean time, and your 3 months notice will serve as your consent for your base pay to be lowered by $6/ hour. Since you will be leaving your reduction in pay

    should be no issue. That's how this works from now on. You can thank your insubordinates for this. You can also thank them for the extra 30 hours of overtime per week you will be assigned to until I find new hires and they are fully trained.

    All this is doing is forcing people to leave with zero notice. And, from my understanding, you can't lower pay for work already performed, so you can not cut $6 off an hour for that paycheck.
